Are log homes more expensive than traditional, stick-built homes?

Given the same size and features, the cost of a log home is comparable to any custom-built home.  However, people who build a log home usually plan to stay, and therefore invest in higher-quality fixtures and finishing's, which can raise the value.

Are log homes harder to finance than traditional construction?

Not really.  We have local banks here in Ashe County and surrounding counties that have worked with previous homeowners of log construction.  A log home is a little different for those that use a percentage payout schedule, but they can work for a log home.

What type of wood is best for a log home?

There are many different species of wood used in log homes and they all carry their own unique characteristics which appeal to different people.  If you are looking for a log that has a lot of grain structure that shows and is strong then Southern Yellow Pine would be the choice for you.  If the look you are wanting is lighter in color and does not have as many knots then White Pine would be the log choice for you.  If you like the scent of cedar and are in a place prone to insects then Western Red Cedar would be the log choice for you.

What type of maintenance is needed for a log home?

A log home typically requires less maintenance than a conventional stick-frame home.  A preservative treatment with stain are recommended as soon as possible after construction is completed.  The preservative should be applied to exterior surfaces every three to five years.  Termite shields on the foundation wall are an inexpensive deterrent, and should be included in any home.

Are log homes energy efficient?

The thermal properties of wood make logs great insulators, and the insulation value increases with log diameter and density.  Graded logs, kiln drying, pre-cutting, profiled corner notches, log adhesive, log-hawg assembly and pre-manufactured window and door jambs make Jim Barna Log and Timber Homes substantially stronger and more energy-efficient than any other type of log system on the market.

Will my logs shrink and crack?

A natural characteristic of log timbers is that some checking (cracking), twisting and shrinking will occur.  If these conditions do occur, they are not considered defects and will not affect the structural integrity of the home either.
